Stasi Surveillance Audio Documentary

Snap Judgment is a weekly documentary podcast produced by WNYC that is heard on NPR.

We're currently looking for a voice actor to help us with a story about the East German secret police. It focuses on a dissident, Ulrike Poppe, who was one of the most intensely surveilled people in all of East Germany. After the fall of the wall, she managed to track down and befriend the officer in charge of her surveillance, but ultimately their relationship ended in tragedy.

Now we need a voice actor (German, female, with a late middle age German-accented voice) who can perform Ulrike's lines in fluent English. What we are NOT looking for is someone to do a very dry, overly respectful read. We would prefer someone who can perform Ulrike's parts with some energy and emotion, as if they were the one being interviewed. A near final script has already been cut together, so there would be no need to translate on the fly. You would just have to speak Ulrike's lines.

Wherever you are based, we can arrange for you to record at a studio space near your home or work. You would take direction from our producer over a phone connection provided by the studio. We expect this project to take roughly 6 hours of, split over two sessions.

When I was a little girl growing up in East Germany, we often played a game we called ‘border’, which went like this: two lines were drawn on the ground and that was the border. Then some of us were border guards and the others were smugglers.

The border guards had to stand between both lines and stop the smugglers-who were trying to smuggle pamphlets or contraband- from crossing from one side of the border to the other. The pamphlets and contraband were usually leaves from trees which we’d somehow try to hide.

I came from good political family, had access to good education, could have gone on to have a good career and quiet life in East Germany, but as I was growing up things bothered me.

For example … our house was directly next to a forest, and the border ran through this forest. So as children we were warned not to go too far into the woods because that’s where the border was. We knew the border guards were armed, and we heard shooting. We would hear the dogs barking and sometimes, when it was dark, we would see the floodlight beams being projected into the sky.

And as kids we were often at other families’ homes, sitting around the coffee table. And I heard people saying that so-and-so and so-and-so had managed to escape to the West. Or that they had been put in prison. And I was interested -- interested in what the building of the wall was resulting in.

But at school, we weren’t even allowed to call the wall, “wall.” There they said it was a ‘structure of peace’, or an ‘anti fascist protection wall’. That was the official terminology, and you weren’t allowed to call it anything else. So even as small children we were told, on one hand, that it’s important to tell the truth, but on the other everyone lied, we were forced to lie. And I was irritated by that. By the fact that there was a sort of … duplicity which we were forced into.
