My vision is to embrace the world in a network of charity”.

These were the words of young Antoine Frederic Ozanam, the founder and the visionary behind Society Saint Vincent de Paul. The society was founded in 1833 among a small group of friends united by faith in the poor parishes of Paris. It is the founding principals of Frederic Ozanam - hope, faith and charity - which have served as a guiding light through the growth of the foundation. The society is named after St. Vincent de Paul - the patron saint of charity - because of the unbreakable link between faith and practice, expressed by aiding the poor and assisting the needy.

At the time of Ozanam’s death in 1853, twenty years after the establishment of the first conference, the society encompassed over 900 conferences and 10,000 members. Today, SSVP encompasses over 51,000 conferences worldwide, over 780,000 members, and is active in over 140 countries. And until today, it is the unshakable strength of the founding principles that enables SSVP to mobilize thousands of people into a global network of compassion, in a way that is inseparable from justice.

1860 start in Beirut City Center

In 1860, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul opened its first chapter in Lebanon, located in downtown Beirut. It was known as Mar Mansour during its time. The school bloomed for almost a hundred years, until it was forced to close down during the Lebanese civil war, from 1975 to 1990. Though the war destroyed most of the school’s archives, there are still a few surviving documents which give us a clear idea of how the school functioned: [DESCRIPTIVE MATERIAL BASED ON ARCHIVES]. Today, all that remains from the original sight is the school’s church. A beautiful ruin, it stands like a resilient symbol of faith and hope among difficult and trying times. For despite the cruelties of the war, SSVP continued to blossom. And today, the society boasts over 50 conferences that range the entire country, spearheading medical, educational, rehabilitative, and rural initiatives.
