# Project Overview

I am producing a book trailer for John J. Dwyer's upcoming Dust Bowl and World War II novel, Shortgrass, about a Mennonite farm boy who must choose between sticking to his community's strictly pacifist ways and standing with his country against the Axis powers after the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor in 1942. In the meantime, college football glory and the skills of a natural born flyer carry him away from home and into contact with famed aviators Charles Lindbergh and Wiley Post, entertainment icons Will Rogers and Bing Crosby, best-selling young author John F. Kennedy, and President Franklin Roosevelt.

# Character Overview and Artistic Direction

See rough preview cut (https://youtu.be/7CDvG4zh3PU) to get an idea for tone and pacing. Many elements are temporary, but the structure and music are what we expect to use.

Mary Katherine Murchison—"The Golden Girl with the Golden Voice"—is a beautiful oil heiress whose mesmerizing voice carries her to Big Band Era stardom. Mary Katherine reveres Lance, but her sudden rise to fame gets the better of her and begins to drive a wedge between them.

We are looking for a classic, Golden Age of Hollywood, mid-Atlantic accent, and a delivery that evokes the stars of that time. Vivien Leigh comes to mind—perhaps because Mary Katherine in some ways channels Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind—but anything evoking the glamor of that era could work really well. Please feel free to provide your own interpretation of this.

PHONE PATCH OR SKYPE PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED.

(Mary Katherine, in the book, is walking with Lance at night shortly after an awkward first meeting, and is testing some things she has heard about him, which she thinks are too ridiculous to be true.)

I do hear strange things about your church, honey, that any old derelict can come—Indians, drunkards, folks who haven’t bathed in ages, even negroes! And that you are against war. ANY war.

I KNEW that last part wasn’t true, because people say you are the roughest football player in the whole school.

(A little sensitively, also shortly after meeting Lance…)

So how much land does your family own, Lance?

(Trying to convince Lance to take a job offer from her father)

Lindbergh himself says he’s never seen a natural born flyer the likes of you.

(Pearl Harbor has just been attacked, the nation is in shock, and Lance is in crisis over whether he’ll stay true to his pacifist ways or join his friends in the fight against the Axis powers. He doesn’t see a clear path forward. Mary Katherine knows him too well, and besides that wants him to go.)

I know you don’t believe in fighting and especially in killing, Lance, but this is about protecting everything we ever believed in. I love you with my whole heart, honey. And I know you and you will go.
