Minnesota Power recently completed their first deployment of Smart Wires PowerLine Guardian technology on a 115 kV line in Little Falls, MN. 54 PowerLine Guardians devices, installed directly on existing power lines, act as valves for electricity. When grid conditions change and power flows increase on this line, the PowerLine Guardians ensure that the loading of this line does not exceed safe levels. This technology pushes power from this line onto other, underutilized paths on the interconnected grid, helping maintain safe operations and consistent reliability. The devices can be controlled remotely by a Minnesota Power grid operator or programmed to activate automatically, responding to real-time line conditions. Through the design and installation processes, Minnesota Power and Smart Wires have formed a strong partnership.
