Ventura County is home to over 850,000 residents and 10 cities. As residents, we live in a beautiful place with safe and well-planned physical environments that provide us with many opportunities to be and stay healthy.
Health in All Policies was adopted by Ventura County BOS, to ensure that the health and well-being of residents is considered when decisions are being made. Decisions like where to build sidewalks for safely walking to school; or how many fast food restuarants in a neighborhood relative to availability of fresh fruits and vegetables; safe bike trails for exercise and the chance to enjoy nature.
“In Oxnard’s El Rio area, Safe Routes to School, made it a priority for students to have a safe route to get to school and home every day.” “Public Works departments can use Health in All Policies to inform them when making decisions about planning safe roads to drive on.”
“The availability of healthy foods balanced with convenience for busy families is critical for a healthy community. As an agricultural community we’re lucky to have so many fresh fruits and vegetables right here in our backyard. We boast 15 Farmer’s Markets in our county each week.”
“And working to provide a healthy environment for all those who live in close proximity to one another. While the number of smokers in our community continues to decrease – only 8.1% of Ventura County residents smoke -- many residents are still exposed to secondhand smoke in the place where it matters most – their homes. Drifting smoke in multi-unit housing, such as apartments and condos, is a serious health concern.”
“Communities across Ventura County have taken steps to address this issue, by passing laws that limit or prohibit smoking, including the establishment of non-smoking units and non-smoking common areas.”
“There are so many great places to bike and hike in Ventura County. As a community we value green space and the opportunities for physical activity. The 4 mile Carlisle Trail in Lake Sherwood is being developed for hiking and equestrian use.
“In the Ojai Valley, the 9 ½ mile Ojai Valley Trail allows for safe passage for the bicyclists who pedal over it, as well as endangered fish that swim beneath it. “
“Transportation is another important example of Health in All Policies in action. The Kanan Shuttle in Oak Park gets you where you need to go without polluting the environment. The shuttle is powered by clean burning natural gas. It’s also a great way to get to know your neighbors.”
It’s been said that Health in All Policies is a practice and a destination. Working together we can take pride in living in a county that remains one of the most desirable places to live in the nation. And when it comes to healthy living, in Ventura County, it all adds up!
