Once upon a time in Warsaw (Warszawa - v’arsh’av’a), in the underground corridors of a burned down old house, there lived a monster.
Every citizen of the Old Market Square knew about this terrible beast, which they did not wish to meet. Ever.

The Basilisk (Bazyliszek - b’azi(h)l’eesh’ek), as it was called, was a strange and fearsome creature. The top half of its body resembled a giant rooster. The head was crowned with a bright red comb and the round googly eyeballs were covered with yellow, red and orange pupils as if there was a fire burning in them.
Below the head, the beast had a snake-like neck, which was long and could twist in all directions. In the middle, there was a huge round belly covered with black as tar feathers. He stood on two eagle legs, which had very long and very sharp claws. Not that the Basilisk ever had to use these claws. The beast really only needed to look someone in the eye and a poor victim dropped dead.

The Basilsk lived in his underground home for years. People knew not to get near the old building but now and then some brave rascal would go down to the cellars led by his curiosity. Sometimes, out of town people would loose their way or a child would run down the stairs after the ball. There would be a short scream, then the silence and not one of them would be seen alive again.

The town’s councillors could not think of any way to get rid of this monster. They had meetings where they proposed some ideas. They even offered a reward for the best idea that anyone could present but to no avail.
Desperate, they finally asked a local scholar for help. He listened to their story and saw their anxiety and he came up with a plan. He said to the councillors ‘the Basilisk could only be killed the same way it kills others. Nothing else would work. You need to find a brave man who would go down to the basement with a mirror in his hand. Once the beast looks in the mirror and looks into its own eyes, it will die’.

So easy! The councillors could not believe how easy the plan was and why none of them have ever thought of it!
There was one problem though. Who would go down knowing that they may well loose their life during this mission.
