Script Details

With the coming of the second world war,

many eyes in Europe turned hopefully, or desperately,

toward the freedom of America.

The new world became the destination of their dreams.

But not everyone could get to Casablanca.

For millions and for generations, a long and roundabout immigration route sprang up.

Mink to Pinsk. Then Odessa and Vienna.

By camel to Antwerp or Hamburg or Liverpool.

Then by ship to New York.

Here, the fortunate ones,

through money, or influence, or luck,

might find relatives in Brooklyn, the Bronx or

New Rochelle.

(Narrator's somber voice fades to happy)

Our story starts here.

Not in the tenements but on the tree-lined, carefree streets of Flatbush and Sheepshead Bay.

They didn’t know each other as they grew up.

She went to Midwood. He went to Madison.

They met at a wedding.

Lots of people meet at weddings.

But they got engaged and then married.

They pursued careers as teacher and artist,

As candidate and elected official.

They raised a family.

Soon, it was their turn to move to the suburbs.

With a view of the Tappan Zee Bridge,

they moved to a new home in Sleepy Hollow Manor

And a new lifestyle.

Over the years, they traveled.

Paris. Moscow. Shanghai.

Then came the grandchildren with their unlimited energy

There is no more to tell.

Let’s just say that fifty years of marriage have taught them many things, especially

That a good martini can keep you smiling every day.
