Script Details

Enter our world of flying flowers, the live butterflies exhibit. For the sake of our fragile little friends please watch your step. The trick is not to chase a butterfly but if you move slowly and quietly, one might just come sit on your shoulder. Our live butterflies are from tropical rainforests across the globe, primarily Central and South America, South East Asia, and parts of sub-Saharan Africa. That’s why it’s so warm in here, we simulate the natural climate of our butterflies, keeping the temperature at about 80 degrees with 80% humidity.

As you walk through the exhibit, be sure to observe the different ways the butterflies interact with their environment. Some will be feeding off of the different food sources we’ve prepared for them; others will be resting with their wings pointed up or out to show the camouflage they have developed to protect themselves in wild. However, these defenses do not protect butterflies from the threats of habitat loss and environmental change. Exhibits like ours help combat that by acquiring butterflies from ecological sustainable farms where these butterflies are naturally found.

The very warm conditions are an important factor in the health of our delicate butterflies. Without it, they would not survive long so please be sure to check yourself for hitchhikers when you go, but come back and see your new friends soon!

When you’re ready, come see an exhibit that has been a famous fixture at the museum for more than 150 years.
