Parent Education Animation Script:
This is Adrian; he’s an energetic, playful toddler.
When a fever and a stuffy nose interrupt his usual routine, his mom and dad are worried.
So they take Adrian to see his health care provider.
Adrian’s provider listens to their concerns, examines Adrian and diagnoses him with a cold.
Mom asks the provider if antibiotics would help Adrian recover faster
Adrian’s provider says that luckily, he will not need antibiotics this time as antibiotics only help with the very small number of infections that are caused by bacteria.
Most respiratory tract infections, like Adrian’s cold, are caused by viruses.
Antibiotics do not fight viruses.
Not having to use antibiotics is great news as they can cause some nasty side effects.
Using antibiotics when they are NOT needed contributes to them not working in the future when they really are needed…
… and leads to the development of superbugs.
Because Adrian is otherwise healthy, his body will be able to fight the virus on its own.
Adrian’s provider and parents talk about what can be done to help him feel better while his body fights the virus.
They also discuss how long Adrian’s symptoms will last…
… and what to do if he does not get better.
After a few days of rest and TLC, Adrian is back to his normal, playful self.
