VO: A lot can happen in 125 years.

VO: For us, the last century and a quarter has brought unimaginable technical advances, better environmental awareness and a renewed commitment to serve our customers.

VO: Take a look at a few of the highlights from our past.

VO: Viscosity Oil was founded in 1892, when the United States was well on its way to becoming an industrial giant.

VO: We stepped onto the scene as a supplier of industrial lubricants with the backing of five keen businessmen who had nothing but opportunity ahead of them.

VO: By 1903, Viscosity decided to headquarter its business in the Manhattan Building on Dearborn Street.

VO: Fast forward just a few years to 1911, and Viscosity was well ahead of its time. We started substituting vegetable products for the lard in cutting oil and introduced a super lubricant called Sub-For-Lard Cutting Oil.

VO: In less than 20 years after it was founded, in 1920, Viscosity’s business expanded with the introduction of two new subsidiaries—Perry Refining and Viscous Paint.

VO: In 1925, as America was still unaware of its impending crash, Viscosity suffered its own crash—a devastating fire. But, with a resilience that has come to be a cornerstone of who we are, we were back at work the next day, rebuilding and reshaping to come back stronger than ever.

VO: Just one year later, Viscosity Oil was keeping the environment in mind by introducing reusable wooden barrels.

VO: In 1927, two new Viscosity products entered the scene: Graigrene and Grai-Penn.

VO: In the early 1930s, America found itself deep into the Great Depression. With President Roosevelt’s implementation of the New Deal came renewed hope and spirit across the country. In 1934, Viscosity was again resilient and introduced a new product: Gearade.

VO: As the country entered into WWII, Viscosity pledged its service by contributing military gun oil—a gun oil that was used by one soldier in particular, who later became Viscosity’s president.

VO: Between 1948 and 1950, two additional products were added to Viscosity’s product line up: Sparks Waterless Hand Cleaner and Oilade.

VO: Building off of the success of Viscosity in its first 70 years, the then president of Viscosity launched a lubricant supply company, Master Oil Products.

VO: By 1955, Viscosity Oil and Master Oil Products were in an active working relationship and, in 1957, they officially merged as one company.

VO: In 1961, when the United States was launching the first Mercury astronaut into space, Viscosity was also launching its new hydraulic fluid product: Hy-Tran Fluid.

VO: The 60s were a revolutionary time for the United States. The Beatles first appeared in America, Woodstock became a large part of the political landscape and social change was being called to action.

VO: Amid all of that change, Viscosity was still hard at work. In 1964, we began to supply Black & Decker with power tool grease—a relationship that would develop for a long time.

VO: In 1973, the oil crisis began. Crude oil prices quadrupled, gasoline prices tripled and the average costs of cars doubled.

VO: Thanks to its solid relationships with suppliers, Viscosity experienced no rationing of the basic oils needed for production needs, meaning no cutbacks in service to our customers.

VO: While others in the industry were suffering from the oil embargo, Viscosity took the opportunity to innovate even further and became the first to package lubricants in plastic shipping pails. These measures set the tone for what is now the Department of Transportation’s standards for oil drops.

VO: In 1981, Viscosity entered the fiber optics industry and began supplying fiber optic coatings.

VO: By 1988, Viscosity was supplying its fiber optic coatings to AT&T and later became AT&T’s sole supplier.
