Script Details

California is a great place to live and work.
An economic engine for the country.
Our region is expected to continue growing which will add more economic opportunities and vitality.
It will also add more vehicles on highways and on our already congested road network.
We all need to get where we're going on time. And everything comes to a halt when traffic comes to a halt. How long you spend in traffic has an impact on your business, your family and your friends, and your life. Not to mention your dog!
What if there was another way to travel?
Now there is.
Caltrans is exploring new ways to travel on highways, because building more freeways doesn't solve the problem long-term.
Caltrans is looking at priced managed lanes. That’s a set of lanes separated from general traffic lanes.
Priced managed lanes are dynamically managed in response to changing traffic conditions.
Sometimes these lanes can be carpool lanes, free to cars with multiple occupants.
These lanes can also become High Occupancy Toll Lanes—called HOT lanes.
Drivers pay a toll based on the number of occupants and traffic conditions.
Single drivers can use the managed lanes by choosing to pay a toll. Depending on vehicle occupancy, carpools can remain free or pay a discounted toll. Vehicles have transponders that indicate
whether drivers are driving alone or carpooling that day.
Tolls can also change based on the time of day and the level of traffic. The heavier the traffic, the higher the toll.
This helps maintain more predictable traffic flow and travel times.
And drivers have more options to get where they want to go.
Caltrans is looking at whether priced managed lanes would help traffic flow, and where best to put them for the most impact.
Because sitting in traffic is not ow we want to spend our time.
More people in the managed lanes helps the other lanes move faster too. That reduces idling time because cars spend less time on the road.
And that cuts vehicle emissions.
Transportation creates 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions; when cars spend less time on the road, we can reduce those emissions.
Priced managed lanes give road users more control over their travel experience.
They get people, goods and emergency vehicles moving through the region more reliably and safely.
Single drivers can choose whether to use them.
And commuters form more carpools because carpool lanes are free or have reduced tolls.
Everyone on the roadway benefits from reliable travel times priced managed lanes offer.
And the revenue stays local— it’s used to maintain the corridor where it was collected—keeping the roadway safe, in good repair and up to date.
With priced managed lanes, we can all more reliably get to the most important moments in life.
