NOAA Blue Whales and Shipstrikes ZD1919673
Collisions between large ships and whales, known as ship strikes, have occurred in the channel. These collisions can severely injure whales and even be fatal. Researchers estimate that between 20-30 of blue, fin, and humpback deaths along the West coast of the United States can be linked to ship strikes every year. Faster ship speeds are known to increase the probability of a fatal ship strike.
We are producing a short documentary - 6 minutes - that provides insight into why whales are struck and how shipping interests are trying to do better.

Between the coast of Southern California and the Channel Islands, lies a 70 nautical-mile stretch of the Pacific Ocean known as the Santa Barbara Channel.
This same channel also serves as an important passageway for another ocean giant…container ships.
Transporting an estimated $13 trillion dollars every year, maritime shipping is the lifeblood of the global economy. At any given moment across the globe, thousands of container ships are steaming across oceans, delivering 90% of our everyday goods and products.
