Technology allows you to control the handpiece automatically by pressing the cup against the tooth, eliminating the need for a foot pedal. This new innovative technology is responsive to each clinician’s individual technique.
This video provides a few suggestions to help you get comfortable with using your Nupro Freedom in SmartMode…
To operate the cordless handpiece in SmartMode, with the cordless handpiece in Standby Mode(the Mode Indicator is solid Green), press the On/Off/Mode button quickly and verify that the Mode Indicator changes from solid Green to solid Purple. This indicates that the unit is in SmartMode. Note that the prophy cup will begin to rotate at a low baseline speed of 500 rpm.
Press the prophy cup into the prophy paste applying a downward force and light pressure.
SmartMode will allow you to control the speed of the prophy cup based upon the pressure applied from the prophy cup to the tooth. By slightly increasing the pressure, the speed of the prophy cup will increase. By reducing pressure, the speed of the prophy cup will decrease. When the DPA cup is removed from the tooth
surface, the prophy cup will return to a low baseline speed.
To exit SmartMode (stop the prophy cup from spinning), press the On/Off/Mode. A solid Green Mode Indicator shows that the cordless handpiece is in Standby Mode.
To enter SmartMode again, press the On/Off/Mode button quickly. The Mode Indicator will change from Green to Purple and the prohy cup will begin spinning at a low baseline speed.
Using a modified pen grasp, rest the handpiece in the V-shaped area of your hand, between the index fingers and thumb.
Stabilize the handpiece with a fulcrum or finger rest
Periodically evaluate your grasp to ensure correct balance and a light grasp to support optimal use of the intuitive Smartmode technology.Position the handpiece so the cup is adapted to the facial surface of the most posterior tooth you are polishing. To initiate cup rotation, gently press the cup against the tooth surface so there is slight flaring of the cup. Continue polishing using light, intermittent pressure, gliding the cup across the tooth without lifting the cup from the tooth surface. Pay special attention to interproximal areas.
Note: keep the cup moving; resting it in one area for any length of time will generate heat.
Remove excess paste or saliva buildup on the cup with the saliva ejector. To turn the handpiece off, with the handpiece in Standby Mode (solid Green Mode Indicator), press and hold the On/Off/Mode button for one to two seconds until the charge indicators turn off, and then release the button
