In 1930, the great industrial leader Andrew Jackson Higgins founded the boat building company Higgins Industries in New Orleans. During World War II one of his many successful designs was his version of the Patrol Torpedo boat, or PT. Wooden craft in a steel navy, their lightweight construction and powerful engines made them fast and maneuverable. With a top speed of over 40 knots -more than 45 miles an hour - the PT boat was the fastest vessel in the US Navy. Built as an offensive weapon, they had one mission: sink enemy ships. PTs traveled under the cover of darkness, in small groups, stalking their prey. They attacked with torpedoes, cannons and machine guns, at close quarters, appearing suddenly out of the night and then fading away into the darkness, making them a tough target to hit.
