This is our friend.
Our friend has autism spectrum disorder. Among other difficulties he sometimes has trouble interpreting and understanding the emotions of people close to him.
Autism Spectrum disorder is a very complex condition and a lot of the contributing factors and mechanisms are still unknown.
A recent study showed that after intranasal administration, vasopressin can enter the brain and impair emotional cognition in healthy volunteers .
Vasopressin is a neurotransmitter in the brain with a conserved role throughout evolution in modulating social behavior. In the brain vasopressin binds to the vasopressin 1a, V1a, receptor.
The V1a receptor is expressed in different brain areas controlling social behaviour.
Elevated vasopressin levels in people with autism will lead to over activity of this G protein coupled receptor, which will in turn inhibit the perception of social information and decrease the rewarding properties of social interactions.
Our new molecule is a vasopressin 1a receptor antagonist. It blocks vasopressin from activating the V1a receptor.
The negative effect of vasopressin on social cognition decreases.
We hope that this can help our friend to understand the emotions of others better.
