Project Main Details

Leo a young rescue lion given to a 4 yr old girl
We're producing a series of web videos designed to promote the world's largest and highest rated animal sanctuary. Each of the stories will be in the animal's own voice and tell of the incredible transition from horrible living conditions to large (often as large as 25 acres) habitats where they receive incredible care and love for the rest of their life.

The goal of each video is to be playful and fun while demonstrating the horrible living conditions each animal was in prior to coming to the Sanctuary. As the video is in each animal's voice please try to mimic the animal's feel and presence.

Leo is a young juvenile lion. Think 3rd or 4th grade little boy, perhaps slightly younger. He's full of energy, super outgoing, loves to talk and excited and a little ADHD and hyperactive. His words need to stumble over themselves with excitement. This little boy lion is both excited and also very "feel" oriented so he's easily able to express how he feels. Lots of pretend bravado and posturing.

What’s up?!!!! My name’s Leo - nardo… but my friends call me Leo…
[pause] You can call me Leo.

Wanna be friends? Want me to show you a few of my favorite places here at the Sanctuary? Do you like playing? I’m the absolute best here at climbing stuff and running and chasing. Look how fast I am?!!! Tag! You’re it! Laughing.

Most days I’m usually pretty busy playing with my best friends, Masai and Muneca, Guera and Agata. They’re really funny and I like them a lot.

They’re always telling me things that they think are like SUPER serious but... I think are actually hilarious. I think sometimes they get a little cross with me cause I can be a little bit too high energy. Masai thinks I have some sort of hyperactive disorder but I don’t think so. I’m just like… uh… super interested in everything and everyone! Look at how fast I can run!!!!

I’ve been at the Sanctuary pretty much all of my life… well… not all of it but for a really long time. You see, even though I’m actually an African Lion, I was actually born in pa… pa… Pachuca, Mexico. Yeah that’s it. That’s a long way away from Africa I guess.

As a teeny tiny cub I was given as a birthday present to a four year old girl… cause, like that’s super smart?!!! Apparently her parents didn’t realize that baby lions grow up to be grown up lions… with like giant teeth and stuff! I mean look at these teeth!!!! [Roars!] Crazy huh? It honestly just wasn’t a good idea for a little girl to have a pet baby lion. So the family sent me to a run down zoo in town. Back then I was just a tiny lion but even for me the zoo was really small, cramped, dirty and gross. I hated it and I cried every night wanting to get out of there.

I don’t know what happened but apparently somebody did something to get me out of that jail and all the way here to the Sanctuary. The trip was pretty scary but I was brave and wasn’t afraid or nothin at all.

I’ve been here at this giant Sanctuary ever since. This place is awesome! I’ve got so much room to run and play! I eat as much as I want and I keep getting bigger and bigger. All the people who work here are really friendly and come by here most every day to say hello. We have some pretty interesting talks and they all say I’m really smart and have really fun stories about my adventures. When the workers drive by I like to race them in their cars because I’m super fast, faster even than the trucks that bring the food!

I know I have some cousins back in Mexico and I’d love it if they could come play with me here too! I hope they’re ok and not stuck in some jail like I was back when I was a baby!

[whispers in sudden mock seriousness] Sometimes... I pretend I’m out on the wide open African savannah, leading my pride of lions on a successful hunt. I hide in the tall grass and don’t move a muscle. … and when Masai or Guera come by [yelling] I jump out and tackle them! [Laughing] I don’t think they like it but I think it’s pretty funny. [sigh] This place is so great! I love it here!
