NARRATOR: In a law enforcement setting, you do not always have compliant subjects. This can make fingerprinting very difficult. In addition, each user, subject, environment, scanner type, and software can impact the quality of fingerprints and the ability to capture prints. The goal is to capture the best quality possible for each situation.
NARRATOR: If fingerprint quality is not taken seriously and is not of good quality, then the likelihood your fingerprint submission will be rejected is increased. Michigan is one of 6 states that require fingerprints for every arrest. The quality of fingerprints not only can impact the safety of our officers, but the subject could potentially be released without ever having prints on file. No Prints means no arrest.
NARRATOR: Submitting quality prints will not only protect the credibility of the state's AFIS, but also improve the ability to solve crimes, match latent prints and identify people.
NARRATOR: Cleaning a subject’s hands can improve the quality of the prints. You can do so by having them wash their hands, or wipe them down with a sanitizing wipe. If this is not possible, just be sure their hands are relatively clean and do not contain any debris.
