During World War II, the Presidio of San Francisco played a pivotal role in the incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans, purportedly in the name of national security. The Japanese internment is one of the darkest moments in American history, and its effects are still being felt today.

Japanese immigration to the US began in the late 1800s, and by the 1930s they had become integrated into the fabric of America.

In 1939 the world fell into another world war while the US remained neutral. That all changed on Dec. 7th 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the US was forced into the conflict.

Everything changed with Executive order 9066. This order, signed by President Roosevelt declared certain areas military zones and allowed the internment of Japanese Americans.
