Project Main Details

Invisible Plastics a man made plague
It is everywhere: the most enduring, insidious, and intimate product in the world.

From the soles of your shoes to the contact lenses in your eyes, the phone in your pocket to the food in your refrigerator, the evidence is unmistakable: We are living in The Plastic Age.

Plastic envelopes us, improving daily life in almost uncountable ways.

And plastic imprisons us in waste and microscopic pollution.. We will need VO for four small video segments.

Script Details

The first step to overcoming an addiction is admitting you have one.

VO: It was less than a hundred years ago that chemists first began to bend and reorder petroleum molecules into a lightweight substance that could be molded into just about any form. Since then, inventors have created hundreds of different plastics, and industry has found millions of uses for them. It’s piling up. Today more than 322 million tons of plastic are produced each year, up from just 1.5 million tons in the 1950s.

If plastic was a country, it would have the world’s 20th-largest economy, greater than those of Austria, Argentina, Egypt, and dozens of others.

The world wants plastic.

Look around you, right now, in your home, your office, outside, and try to count the plastic articles. How high did you reach before giving up?

That’s just the stuff you can see. Beyond the naked eye is a realm of invisible plastic: fibers, fragments, and chemicals infiltrating every aspect of daily life.

VO: Every start and stop of every car sends microscopic particles of styrene tire dust wafting into the air. Each wash of every synthetic garment releases up to 1900 microscopic plastic fibers of into waterways. Every rinse of every paint brush sends liquid plastic down the drain. Every straw and plastic bag that rides the ocean waves will break down into fragments smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Plastic doesn’t go away; it only gets smaller. And as we now know, it’s infiltrating our bodies.
