Project Main Details
As this region’s public power provider, IID delivers reliable, efficient and affordable energy in a territory approaching 6,500 square miles. From our humble beginnings as a rural irrigation district and electrical utility over a century ago, IID has become a modern and innovative steward of the area’s precious resources and a champion of it’s untapped potential. We’re now the third largest public power provider and sixth largest electrical utility in California - serving more than 150,000 customers with over 1,100 megawatts.
IID is focused on delivering the highest level of customer service, by ensuring system reliability for the sustained benefit of the regional economy, the environment and the communities we serve - constantly evolving and streamlining processes to strengthen our power delivery system, secure our balancing authority and maintain over 1,300 miles of energy transmission.
IID is an industry leader and long-time proponent of renewable energy, setting procurement targets that have met and exceeded those set by the state and federal government. In fact, we currently serve our customers with more than 30% renewables and have connected more than 4,000 individual rooftop solar installations to the grid. After all, the region offers abundant sunshine, enviable geothermal capacity, continuous water flow, steady wind and numerous other renewable resources.
IID is further innovating by leveraging technologies such as BESS, our recently launched 30-megawatt hour battery energy storage system which is one of the largest lithium-ion battery systems in the world. BESS provides greater reliability and allows for the inclusion of additional renewable generation on the grid. But we’re not stopping there, IID is currently developing additional storage opportunities and a community solar program to give our customers even more choice.
Perhaps no other opportunity shines brighter than the “energy, water and environmental” nexus that is the Salton Sea. The Sea is California’s largest inland body of water and a stopover for over two-thirds of the bird species in the continental United States. But it’s also a powerhouse - with over 1,700 megawatts of geothermal potential. That’s enough energy to reliably power over a million homes and more capacity than anywhere else in the United States.
IID is exhibiting proactive leadership through our strategic planning and regional teamwork to make our vision for the Sea a reality… because development of geothermal and other renewables offers the added possibility of enhancing quality of life, restoring the natural environment and mitigating dust emissions created as the sea recedes.
Coupled with IID’s secure water rights and equitable distribution standards, the possibilities for new development and harnessing renewable energy are immense. IID is a valuable connection and a predictable partner in this thriving region of growth. Join us as we become the utility of a sustainable future.
