Think about one of the toughest decisions a person could ever face – abortion. Some people say that an unborn child faces a bleak future and low quality of life if he or she comes from a poor family, or if the timing of the pregnancy is bad, or if the baby will be born with a disability. They say that’s cruel, and abortion is the compassionate answer. But doesn’t that all depend on how you’re defining quality of life and success? I mean, does quality of life really come from how many pleasures and possessions we have? Is a successful life really defined by accomplishments, popularity, or being better than others? When a baby is killed in an abortion because someone thinks his life isn’t perfect enough, we all lose. We lose the chance to be generous. We lose the opportunity to sacrifice a little of ourselves for someone who is vulnerable. We miss out on the fulfillment that comes from embracing every member of the human family, no matter what their challenges are. And we lose our hearts along the way. What we thought was compassion was actually a judgement that someone else’s life wasn’t worth living.
