Script Details

A lineman is a tradesman who constructs and maintains electric power transmission and distribution systems. The occupation began with the widespread use of telegraphs in the 1840’s. However, lineworkers today have come a long way from the days of hanging telegraph wires on trees. In the 1930’s there was a big push to electrify rural areas. Electricity changed the rural landscape of America forever and the growing demand for affordable and reliable electricity is the backbone of our economy. Without lineman America’s electrical infrastructure would cease to exist.

It is estimated that between now and 2030 $1.4 trillion dollars will be spent on building new power generation and transmission resources. On top of that, 40% of the workforce in the United States is said to be retiring in the next 5 to 10 years.

Southeast Lineman Training Center was established in 1999 for training apprentice lineman to help equip the next generation of lineworkers. Today, SLTC is one of the largest and most recognized schools for hands-on apprentice training.

Every year more than 600 future lineworkers graduate from SLTC. Our facility includes three campuses and over 75 acres of training grounds with distribution, transmission and substation equipment.

Your typical day at SLTC begins in the classroom receiving instruction on electrical systems and how they work, from the makeup and operation of transformers, to rigging, grounding and most importantly, basic electricity.

The classroom instruction will be followed by your field training. 70% of the training you’ll receive is hands-on. You’ll train eight hours a day, four to five days every week that you’re in the program. Plus, you will obtain your Class A CDL, certifications in flagging and CPR/First aid and OSHA training.

It’s important for you to remember that SAFETY is our number one priority and you need to have all the tools of the trade to help you complete your task, but more importantly to stay safe.

Your field training includes everything from learning the tools of the trade, to climbing, stringing and sagging conductor, and building transformer banks. We have over 80 field competencies that you will complete during your time here with us.

Our campus offers you the most comprehensive hands-on training available. Every day at SLTC, knowledge learned in the classroom is then applied in the field to develop disciplined skills and abilities; this all takes place in a realistic environment which is as close to the real world as you’re going to get.

We even developed a night storm simulation training to give you an experience that other schools cannot. You will end up becoming that first responder, the ones that keep our lights on, the ones that go to work when the rest of us are at home hunkered down during a storm.

When you graduate from SLTC, 9 times out of 10 you will be a solid, quality hire, because we will push you to a standard second to none.

The only limits in this industry are the ones you place on yourself. You will be equipped with the knowledge, discipline, and ability to become as successful as you choose to be.

With 40-50% of our countries experienced lineman retiring in the next 5 to 10 years, the job market, eager for new hires will give you the opportunity you’ve been looking for. As an SLTC student you’ll have an incredible opportunity over the next 15 weeks to start a career and change your life.
