Script Details

These French historical periods make for great theater. Conflict is at the foundation for good stories, whether a musical or straight dramatic work. The life-and-death struggles, along with the historical, political, social and moral dimensions depicted in Les Mis and Scarlett Pimpernel are all about conflict. It's ripe for composers to pick from.

Accuracy sometimes suffers in the name of art. The stories have been highly romanticized, stylized and personalized, which is essential for giving audiences an access point to the story on stage. That human dimension helps draw us into the slice of history. We see characters, we see bits of ourselves.

Musicals can be excellent gateways and appetite whetters. Should you turn to them solely for historical knowledge? Probably not, given that the stories have been altered for dramatic effect. But combine the musical with textbooks to further the breadth of knowledge, and you have a win-win situation. If a musical pulls you in, you become curious. I'm sure many audience members googled "baricade" after seeing Les Mis to figure out if it was real. Theater is a great way to entice people to want to learn more.
Please note that you should only use the script or your recording of it for auditioning purposes. The script is property, unless otherwise specified, of the voice seeker and it is protected by international copyright laws.
