I was a history major in college at USC, so I was knowledgable about the time and place. I read the Scarlet Pimpernel books, saw the film and miniseries, and felt I was on my way and comfortable about the material.

I always make changes because the job is not to do a musical infomercial on history. The job is to create great theatre. We have poetic license as artists to do that. The Scarlet Pimpernel is not a period piece. It is a modern adaptation, set against the historical backdrop of the French Revolution. For instance, all the rescue scenes in the show were created to be entertaining (with some humor), not necessarily historically accurate.

Musical theatre is a good way to introduce people to all kinds of things, including historical people, places, events, and situations. Because it’s musical theatre, and hopefully entertaining, we create a world that is exciting and interesting, and the audience can learn things without even realizing it. A lot more fun than studying!

This period in French History appealed to me because The French Revolution, its characters, events, etc., all have great conflict and resolution of conflict. It's all about the drama!
