Script Details

Since 2007, New York City’s Center for Economic Opportunity has used innovation, and an evidence-based approach to solve the challenges of poverty.

Located inside the mayor’s office, it has launched over 70 programs. Among them --
Pre-K for All...N-Y-C I-D…and ONE-N-Y-C. The office is continuously expanding its expertise in research, service design, and data integration.

One of the Center’s most successful programs is commonly known as ASAP (read asap, not individual letters). It’s designed to help students attending community college complete their studies quickly.

CUNY (pronounced Q-knee)-- The City University of New York -- had an idea for how to improve graduation rates. With $6 million in funding, the Center for Economic Opportunity helped CUNY set up the program and rigorously track its progress.

Students enrolled in the ASAP (read asap, not individual letters) program receive financial assistance, intense academic counseling and metro cards.

Student advisors are carefully chosen. Often they have first hand experience with the challenges ASAP (read asap, not individual letters) students face. As their relationship is built, students know they don’t have to repeat their circumstances every time they meet.

Traditional community college programs graduate only about 25 percent of students in three years, but in partnership with the Center for Economic Opportunity, the CUNY ASAP program graduates more than 50 percent in the same time period.
