Early Head Start’s primary goals are to promote perceptual learning, motor skills, physical development, cognition, language and literacy, approaches to learning, and social and emotional development. It serves families with infants or toddlers under the age of three, and has programs to serve pregnant women. The Home-Based Program is one of the many options designed to serve families and to promote the major learning areas of early life.
As an enrolled family, you will be connected with a home visitor--an expert in the field of early development and learning. During the minimum, once a week, 90-minute visits, your home visitor will come to your home, spend time with you and your child, and partner with you to provide your child with what he or she needs to grow and learn. Together, you will talk about your hopes and dreams for your child and think about how to playfully encourage him or her to learn new things, from using words to ask for a toy to picking up once playtime is over.
Home visitors support your use of your home language. Infants and toddlers should mostly hear their home language, but should also hear some English. Preschool children should begin to master English while continuing to improve their home language skills.
About twice a month, small group gatherings, called Socializations, are held, where groups of enrolled families come to meet other parents and let the kids socialize and play with other children their age.
All Head Start and Early Head Start programs follow a set of standards to ensure high quality, comprehensive services for enrolled families and children. With over 100,000 children served in the home-based option in the 2014-2015 program year, these services provide support and information about health, nutrition, parenting, child development, and other topics that are important to you and your family.
