You won’t find any desks. Or textbooks.
But there is a classroom along Alabama’s pristine coast offering exciting outdoor educational opportunities—Gulf State Park. And while there are no hallways to roam, there are miles of trails connecting forests, wetlands, dunes, freshwater, and saltwater.
For generations, Gulf State Park’s seven vibrant ecosystems have taught us about nature. All of its recent enhancements are meant to inspire visitors to explore and learn about the park’s natural assets. Once completed, the new Learning Campus will bring it all together—an environmentally friendly hub where visitors can linger in the park, hear lectures, and set off on guided tours to discover native animals, insects, plants, and other wildlife. Lodging options at the Learning Campus will add to the park’s existing cabins, lodge, and campgrounds that offer a place to stay overnight or over a week’s vacation while learning about everything there is to discover here. From the park’s historic culture and Native Americans who first cultivated this land, to its indigenous flora and fauna, there’s just no end to what the park can teach us.
Learning Campus programs will complement the park’s existing educational opportunities such as the popular Nature Center and year-round outdoor learning programs led by the Park naturalist. New classrooms and outdoor gathering spaces will give visitors plenty of room to breathe in and learn about the unique combined smells of forest and salt air, while a public restaurant will offer a place for the local community to gather and share knowledge about the park’s indigenous plants and animals. We’re also partnering with community leaders, college professors, and educators to foster learning and make the park more accessible for students to experience over six thousand acres of legacy trees, seasonal flowers, marshes, migratory birds and more.
As Alabama’s coastal classroom, Gulf State Park is living proof education can be fun. And while there isn’t any homework, the new Learning Campus will help visitors return home with memories that will last for years.
