Script Details

Going through barista competitions means progressing from performing shared standards, to creating original sensory experiences. To support standards in early rounds, while celebrating innovation more and more in later rounds, in 2017 the World Barista Championship will receive the first format changes designed for use exclusively in World-level competition.

To open-up new service possibilities competitors will be able to select from 8 different WBC Station Layout configurations, including multiple height and seating options.

To enable the over 60 National Champions competing to continue to present their full-length, livestreamed routines, the preliminary round will move to multiple simultaneous stage performances.

To allow more control over espresso extraction, competitors will be able to request the temperature their espresso machine is set to.

No separate technical scoresheet will be utilized after the preliminary round, focusing the Sensory and Head Judges on creativity, presentation and flavor expression.

It is critical that National Championships remain streamlined, standards supporting, and easy to produce; so Nationals will continue with technical judging in all rounds, the 2016 single station layout, and standard machine temperatures.
