The sun’s got nothing on you—you’re up before dawn. Every blessed day.

Grab a worn T-shirt, the oldest pants you own. Pull on work boots, hard hat, vest—don’t forget your gloves.

The workday’s beginning—paving starts early.

A brief coolness before the paver and the day heat up, sweat running down your back. Steam rises from a fresh mat. Diesel and a steady stream of hot mix trucks keep the paver moving. You run on sweet tea and a left-over meatloaf sandwich.

A string of orange barrels keeps a blur of cars and trucks at bay, a river of steel 24-short inches from your shoulder.

A deadline presses, nobody cares that last night’s downpour washed out the base course. Two lifts will be down before you see your baby again. A second paver is being called in—you’ll make it. You always do.
The gauge says 93 percent compaction—congratulations. Now clean the equipment. You’ll need more than soap to get the tar off your hands. Corn on the cob and barbeque chicken for dinner. A kiss from your baby, and it’s lights out. Tomorrow is already on its way.

Welcome to [Company Name]. We salute the hard-working, highly skilled people who build the roads that safely carry us to work, school, home, and everywhere we travel. Thank you for a job well done.
