Script Details

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world. It stretches more than 2,300 kilometres along Australia’s north-eastern coastline, and covers an area of nearly 350,000 square kilometres - roughly the same area as Italy or Japan.

The Great Barrier Reef is famous for its more than 3,000 coral reefs, but it also contains many other types of habitats, including mangroves and beds of seagrass.

The size and complexity of the Great Barrier Reef make it one of the richest collections of life found anywhere in the world.

We’re going to look at both the living and non-living parts of the reef, and some of the cycles and systems through which they interact with each other.

The biotic factors of an ecosystem are its living features: the plants, animals and other forms of life that exist there.

The Great Barrier Reef has a diverse range of biotic factors, one of the most important being coral.
