Script Details

Wildfires have always been a part of life in the west and always will be.
Each year, we see media coverage of the devastation. It’s easy to think there’s not too much we can do about it, that whatever communities do to prepare won’t really matter in the face of a raging wildfire.
In fact, preparation is what matters most...

...and that’s where the Bureau of Land Management’s Wildland Fire Community Assistance Program comes in.
The BLM manages over 245 million acres of land in the U.S. Most of it western rangeland. Unlike U.S. Forest Service or National Park Service lands, most BLM lands are intermingled among a variety of private, County and State land owners.
This makes partnerships critical for the BLM.

Years ago, many fires fought by the BLM went unnoticed. But today, as cities expand and more people choose to live near wildland areas, it’s rare that a rangeland fire does not threaten to destroy homes or other community assets.

Because of this, the BLM and other agencies in the Department of Interior developed the Community Assistance Program, designed to support many different activities including wildland fire education, mitigation, prevention, and cooperator assistance.
