The Advanced Variable Drive system by Caterpillar Marine brings Caterpillar’s renowned
mechanical innovation to marine transmissions, resulting in new levels of operating efficiency.

So what is the advanced variable drive system—or AVD?

A conventional shaft line connects a single input—an engine—to a single output—a propeller. But advanced variable drive is an integrated propulsion system. It connects an engine and a hydrostatic motor to a single propeller. This design optimizes engine and system operation independently of propeller speed, which translates to superior performance and fuel efficiency gains of 15-20%.

So how does AVD work?

The heart of the AVD is the planetary gear, which receives input from both the engine and hydrostatic motor. The planetary gear has three main components:

- The sun gear, which is powered by the hydrostatic motor
- The carrier gear, which contains smaller planet gears and is powered by the main engine
- And the ring gear, which drives the propeller

This configuration allows gear ratios to be freely selected and propeller speed to be independent from engine speed.
