Cal Poly offers a distinctive Learn by Doing education that prepares our students for the future – starting now. But, our students don't just go on to become leaders in science, technology and industry. Our Cal Poly Mustangs are leaders and change-makers who can innovate, communicate, and engage in the real world.

The task of preparing our diverse students in some cases means rethinking the traditional college experience. The structure and norms of a traditional university campus may work well for some students, but not for everyone. Many promising students at Cal Poly are the first in their families to attend college. They have concerns about college affordability or traveling far away from home. Many wonder about the diversity on campus and whether they will find an inclusive atmosphere.

At Cal Poly, the Scholars program offers diverse students a dynamic college experience while supporting them on every step of their journey.

The Cal Poly Scholars program provides annual scholarships, advising support and workshops in an interactive living-learning community …
… But the core of the Scholars program is our community -- a vibrant network of services that includes students, advisors, coordinators, university faculty, and industry leaders.
Through this community, we create rich and dynamic learning opportunities that go beyond the traditional college experience, allowing students to thrive during their time at Cal Poly, and to build the skills to succeed after graduation.

The 4-year Engagement Curriculum is the shared vision of our Cal Poly Scholars community, and the road map for our program. The curriculum guides the learning opportunities that we create for Scholars to grow as leaders and change-makers in a constantly evolving world.

The Curriculum has three program goals:

First, we help students develop a personal on-campus support network. You can see that at work in our proactive academic-advising and co-curricular workshops.

Next, we help students enhance their sense of belonging at Cal Poly as part of a community of Scholars. As a community, we thoughtfully engage in conversations about identity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

Third, we help students develop the knowledge and interpersonal skills they will need for lifelong personal and professional success. This includes critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and team collaboration.
Our program is designed to respond to the needs and journey of each individual student.

So, how do we make it all happen?
In Year 1, we focus on Foundations & Planning. Cal Poly Scholars are housed together in an interdisciplinary student community that creates a culturally diverse and dynamic experience. We bring workshops and advising into the community to engage the Scholars where they live and learn together.
In Year 2, we focus on helping Scholars Connect & Communicate. Students develop their sense of self and their professional brand. Scholars also learn the skills to support future communication, leadership and change-making.
In Year 3, Scholars begin to Explore & Engage more deeply, identifying their values, passions and leadership style. Scholars also get exclusive opportunities to explore their field of study through networking events and industry panels.
Finally, as students prepare for graduation, we support them to Transition and Apply their critical and creative thinking skills to their future careers, as well as to a rich and active home and civic life.
The Scholars community supports students from the beginning of their journey at Cal Poly, and empowers Scholars to succeed long after graduation.
SUCCESS AT CAL POLY AND BEYOND.
