The word “emotion” can be understood as a state of mind. Emotions are the mental responses to the activities that dominate a person’s life. They rest in the unconscious mind. Emotions influence our decision-making, for example our interest in certain activities are distinguished by boredom, excitement or another emotion.
Emotions are very intense, trigger extreme response and stay for a short period. The reason behind an emotion is usually fixed and can be assessed. An example is one of your siblings disagreeing with you over the family’s vacation plan and as a result of this you responded with disgust.
In contrast to emotions, a mood stays for longer periods of time. Moods are less powerful but can be consistent for days or weeks. The root cause of mood may not be easily identified. An example is loss of interest in pleasurable tasks that you have been enjoying since childhood without any apparent interfering factor.
To enhance positive emotions and good mood, research has demonstrated certain activities showing positive effect.
Amongst others, medidational excercises as well as physical activity proved to be an immediate relief source from bad mood, feelings and negative emotions. The importance of exercise doubles up due to its ability to promote endorphin release. Endorphins are natural pleasure hormones released by our body through limbic system responsible to control emotional activity. Exercise and endorphin release induce well-being by a number of healthy changes in brain, they involves calmness, peace of mind, less risk of inflammations and better neural activity pattern.
Obviously, the understanding and growing self-awareness of emotions is crucial to deploy the mental coping mechanisms. That’s why we’ll be starting your journey with understanding emotions and moods, evolving to recognizing emotions you face in your daily life. Purpose of this is to strengthen your inner self by enhancing your coping mechanisms.
