After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “The hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. Very truly I tell you, the Son of Man will go as it has been decreed but woe to that man who betrays him!’ His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant will betray him. John was reclining next to the Lord. Peter motioned to John and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
Leaning back against the Lord, he asked him, “Lord, who is?”
The Lord answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.”
Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So the Lord told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. Since Judas was in charge of the money bag, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Festival, or to give something to the poor. It was already night and as soon as Judas had taken the bread; he went out.
When he was gone, the Lord said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him. God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told all the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”
The Lord Replied, “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you Peter that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers. Very truly I tell you Simon son of John, where
I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I lay down my life for you.”
The Lord answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you Peter. Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!”
Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.
Then the Lord Jesus said, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
Truly I tell you that what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
