(Anne: Humira? Oh, right. That's the injection my Rheumatologist gave me in her office. Am I supposed to go to her office for every injection? She showed me how to do this myself.)
Your doctor starts the therapy and teaches you to self-administer. We will send the medication to you to do at home.
(ANNE: That's great. I'm a teacher so leaving school early to get to a doctor's appointment is really difficult.)
You are! What grade do you teach?
(ANNE: Fifth! I love that age)
I imagine that's exhausting! Do you find that you have energy at the end of the day?
(Anne: Oh no, not much at all! I can't blame the kids, though. I think I'm just getting old!)
Aren't we all! Let's talk about your medications.
(ANNE: Yes. I just switched from three different pills to just insulin. I also take pain meds -- norco and vicoden.)
Your rheumatologist has prescribed Humira for your RA. Humira may help with pain associated with your RA over time. Vicodin ("vike-o-din") was also prescribed to help with the pain you have reported. It sounds as though she wasn't aware that you were also taking Norco ("nor-co"). We will call your doctor and find out which she would like you to take since they are both pain killers. You only need one, if any. We will call you back with her decision.
(ANNE: OK. Thank you. You said the Humira may help over time - how long will it take?)
Humira any take up to 3-4 months before you will see the full benefit of the medication. It is very important not to miss any doses of Humira unless directed by your physician. I encourage you to document the type of RA pain you are having and what level of activity makes it better or worse. We will call you every month and review what you are observing about your pain and other RA symptoms to track your progress as well as help you process your refill and answer any other questions you may have. Of course you can always call us anytime. Now let's look at the cost of Humira for you. I see that you have a co-pay of $100 per month.
(ANNE: Yes. I worry about the cost of this new prescription. $100 is really expensive)
Let me tell you about our Bridge program, for all of our patients, we link the manufacturer of specialty medications, like Humira, to members to help them afford the medications they need. [slight pause, hear typing on computer}. Yes, Anne, your copay will only be $5.
(ANNE: Oh that's fantastic! I'm so glad you checked into that and Im really glad you called!)
