Plasma Renin Guided Therapy Hero Animation
ZD2785064
Since the 1960's a group of scientists have studied the effects of a hormone produced by the Kidneys called Renin. (we pronounce it "reeeenin") which has an important role in controlling a person's blood pressure. The balance of salt and renin in ones body determines wether or not your blood pressure is in proper range for long term health. One of the lead scientists in the group was John Laragh, he was on the cover of Time Magazine in the 1970's for his work. Present day, his surviving spouse, and fellow scientist, Jean has taken up the cause of getting the word out to the public and health care professionals that a test exists which can help doctors to better treat high blood pressure. It is called the Plasma Renin test. With an iphone and galaxy app, your doctor can take the results of the test and better know which types of medications could be applied more accurately to your high blood pressure treatment regime. This animation is the first in a series of videos and website content being formed to educate both the public and professional sectors. This video is for medical pros. don't be intimidated by the medical terms, I'll easily walk you through pronunciations.

Renin (pronounced reeeeniiiin) does not cause arteries to narrow by itself. It does so via a series of events.

Renin cuts Angiotensin one from Angiotensinagen molecules in the blood.

Then angiotensin converting enzyme, also called ACE, cuts a piece off angiotensin one, to form angiotensin two.

Then angiotensin two attaches to a receptor on the wall and that causes the artery to narrow and blood pressure to go up.

When a patient takes an ACE inhibitor, it circulates in the patient’s blood.

Then the ACE inhibitor binds to the ACE molecules and that prevents ACE from clipping angiotensin one from angiotensinagen.

That, in turn, causes angiotensin two to disappear from the blood… the arteries widen, and blood pressure falls.
