--- I’m going to tell you the story of my friend Arian’s life. I just knew him for one night but he changed my whole life.

-- I remember like it was yesterday when I first met him. I liked him from the first moment we met.

- I had been in and out of prisons since I was a kid. He was not the usual guy you would meet in jail. I could almost smell the excrement trying to get out of his pants.

- I was so desperate to not think about the rope embracing my neck in the morning that I would have even given him my last cigarette to hear his story.

- He was born a long time ago. When we still had a king. When an Afghan could keep his head up high, without bullets ripping it off. It was before the noise of motors filled the streets and when a handshake meant more than anything in the world. We were too high up in the mountains to know the ways of the world. We were naive but that would change.
