My Voice Experience

Well, my love affair with the voice and words started with Pablo Neruda's "Sexual Waters," -- I was 17 years old and I was hired to read this poem for modern dance troupe, Merce Cunningam Dance co. in NYC. It was my first job as a "voice actor," and since then I performed off-Broadway ("The River Flows" at the Harold Clurman theater) and went to Juilliard in 1994 on a full acting scholarship. Instead of acting however, I wrote and directed--but the classical training has stayed with me, forever, enabling me to recite Shakespeare, classical texts, as well as contemporary dramas for the stage and radio. I wrote, designed, and directed plays until 2003.

In 2005, I began to write short fiction and found myself reading my own work. I was prompted to do this more and more often, and eventually I realized I did have at least one profitable talent: speaking.

I currently perform monologues and short stories at the National Black Theater in Harlem, the HERE theater in Greenwhich Village, and at the Wednesdays at One series in Lincoln Center at Alice Tully Hall. My stories are surrealistic satires--fragments of the everyday battles the little man fights in order to save his identity and preserve his dignity. My vocal style is heavily tailored to my "Nomad Junkie" persona -- that of a misanthropic, agitated, and exhausted "loser" in the world who is only trying to make sense of the hostility around him. By using different intonations, cadences, colors, and at times "accents" -- I am able to weave an entire world of experience and emotion similar to that of an abstract painting.

I can paint with my voice any which way. Broad, clashing colors, metallic drips...or simple lines, neat points, and clean punctuation.

Additional Skills

I erected the very first Black American Theater in Lincoln Center in 1995 and brought the public debate of August Wilson and Robert Brustein to a fore at Juilliard, I was the first actor from Peforming Arts High School to get accepted into Juilliard in ten years breaking the losing streak in 1994. I am a native New Yorker, mixed background--my parents were black and Indian Trinidadians who died in the 1970's and I was raised by a Jewish couple in Queens. I have an extraordinary appreciation and genuine understanding of different styles and races and cultures and classes -- having grown up in an eclectic neighborhood.

I studied theater for one month in Moscow (with Marat Yusim and Oleg Tabokov) in 1992 and spent New Year's in the same hotel that Pres.Bush Senior (at the time) was staying at the time.
I was homeless for one year due to lack of employment...
I am married to a German artist.
I write for Savage Paw Press.
I love language and sound and pray that words and their power can one day find itself at centerstage again...in this overly-amped-visually-drenched-culture.

Voices and words and sound encourages us to listen in order to hear -- the thoughts, ideas, and feelings we usually miss or take for granted.

I am a hige fan of jazz, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, audio recordings of Animal Farm, and Folkways recordings--particularly the work of Studs Terkel.
