Kathy Jarrett

Rich, warm, sometimes sarcastic, charactery

Voice Description

A voice with warmth, depth, confidence and sophistication, but that can veer into motherly, mischievous, sexy, full-on snarky or even downright silly as needed for commercials.

For presentations, I am professional with the sterling sound of authority and command without being stuffy.

In narrations such as audio books, it varies with the subject matter: bubbly or intense or omniscient, delving into diverse characters (from quavery grandma to coy ingenue to dashing daredevil or nasty villain).

For non-fiction narration such as documentaries or audio tours, my voice is smooth yet glimmering with fascination for the subject matter, smooth yet interested.

So, my voice can be quirky or reliable, and offer what you didn't know you needed.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

I can do a believable German accent (since I speak it passably). I imitate French, Scandinavian, Australian and several kinds of British (hoity-toity aristocrat to earthy Cockney), those mainly for their humorous appeal or to distinguish characters.

As for American dialects, I can pass persuasively as a New Yorker (having lived there a while), especially a dense Bronx or Brooklyn twist. I'm great at a sugar-coated Southern dialect, and can muster up a flat Mid-Western or twangy Texan drawl, as well.

For characterizations, I can offer a wide range" from sickly age to exuberant young energy, wide-eyed wonder to hardened bitterness, creepy coldness to adoring love, goofy clownishness to silky self-assurance, crisp credibility to soft sincerity. I am better at playing my age or older, as my voice is rather rich and textured—but I can venture into youthful breathiness too.

My Voice Experience

I've had quite a range of experiences with VO work this far into my career, and I'd love to branch out into some new modes. I tried acting for a while after I retired from teaching, extras work on a Jennifer Aniston movie to starring parts in several independent and student movies, a fitting role as a teacher in a training video.

For commercials, I voiced a bouncy radio ad for a local shoe store back East, told the tale of the helping hands at a Veterinary hospital, and did a longer-form ad for a hospital chain on the West Coast. For a web-site creator, I voiced “Welcome to my site” in a slew of varied accents and tones.

For The Global Fund, a non-profit based in Switzerland that provides humanitarian, medical, and educational assistance in developing countries, I performed the narration for two videos that air on their web site and YouTube.

Because of my husband’s illness, I had been unable to audition for some time. Now I’m ready to plunge back into the process, and I would love to do more narration and longer forms, as well a tackling all kinds of commercial work.

My Training

Back in high school I took Speech class and joined the Speech and Debate team (voted Best Speaker by my class). For my Bachelor’s Degree at Vassar College, I majored in English, drinking in all kinds of literature. My Master’s Degree through Portland State University was also in English, and to get my Education certificate I took a course on Public Speaking.
For almost 25 years, I taught high school English and Public Speaking, and coached the Speech and Debate team for about 10 years. I particularly enjoyed reading prose and poetry selections to my students before discussing them. I modeled all types of speaking to my Speech students and then judged tournaments. I also wrote and narrated scripts for the Portland Symphonic Choir, where I've sung for 35 years, also writing promotional materials including radio ads and press releases for them.
Later I taught some college classes, informative and persuasive writing. After creating my own workshop about fighting stage fright, I offered the skills I’d created as a coach to adults in local colleges and employees at the transportation agency.
After I retired from teaching, I tried some acting, from extras work on a Jennifer Aniston movie to starring in several independent and student movies. A video for training teachers was a natural for me. I also took VO lessons for about two years from a local coach, including group classes where we critiqued each others’ work. Recently I enjoyed a workshop from Tom Chantler, a VO veteran based in LA.

Additional Skills

I'm very good at explaining things, having done so for many years as a teacher. I know what to emphasize and what to home in on for the listener.

Also a writer, I have penned a variety of genres, from children's books to informative and promotional materials, to a book for preparing for an exam in English and Classical literature, to a memoir/self-help book for caregivers and family members of those with dementia (to be published soon). So I understand writing and how to make a point well.

I love art and photography, doing pencil drawings for many years and now focusing on nature and travel photography, so I have an eye for the artistically pleasing.

For nearly all my life I've been a singer, so I bring that sensibility to the spoken word as well. And I could wrap my cords around a good jingle, too.

Travel is my other passion; I have been to all the continents except Antarctica. I appreciate other cultures, cuisines, and artistic endeavors, and bring my insatiable curiosity to my travels as well as my work.
