Sharp, witty, authoritative, hip adventurer
"Hmmm...that's a tough one to quantify. I just know that I tried really hard to recast you at one point and finally gave up. If I were describing it to a casting agent I'd say you sound like a blue-collar white guy who reads a lot. Casual but smart, def straight, knows more than average but isn't a dick about it. That all came across in your read." -- Wednesday Lee Friday, author of Kiss Me Like You Love Me
"Joe Roesch is the consummate professional. From newscasts to commercials, and even audio book narration...every project we've worked on together over the years has been top notch. He is a quick learner on new equipment, and takes direction extremely well." -- Dan Martin, News & Operations Director, WAAM/Owner: dbm Voicewerks.
"Like a mix between Fergie and Jesus." -- Ed Williams, Producer/Engineer

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
Well, let's see... Mid-western (US) is my normal accent, Southern, English (I play in a band and my singer is English), I've had at least a pretty decent impersonation of all of our sitting (US) presidents going back to Reagan, several Senators, Congressmen (not so much Congresswomen, but try me) and other presidential wannabes, cartoon characters (I think I cut me teeth on Ren and Stimpy as a late-teen), authoritative anchor-man-type voices, 'the guy next door,' 'the jerk next door,' urban African-American drug dealer next door(M/F), educated African-American next door(M/F) and my sister for starters.
My Voice Experience
I've worked in radio news for a few years and the 'Authoritative' voice is pretty much my resting voice. However, I've been doing character voices my entire life. They never really came into play much doing radio news, but they're there. My voice has been used in many less-authoritative roles like commercials and such. I've never really thought much of it because to me, it's just the sound that comes out when I talk, but people have been telling me my entire life that my voice sounds very unique, like I should be on the radio or something. I've always really admired Darrell Hammond during his SNL days for the way he examines someone so thoroughly when he's designing his impression of them. I'd always wanted to do more character voices and skit stuff during my old boss Ken Kelly's shows back at WAAM but everything suddenly went off the tracks when the owner of the station died and it was sold. My long-term goal is to have a full-scale production facility, but ya gotta start somewhere. So here I am.
I graduated from Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in June of 2000 and began working in radio in April of 2001, working as a board op and writing and producing local news segments and commercials at WAAM in Ann Arbor, MI. I later moved over to what was known at the time as the Clear Channel cluster, again doing some board opping but not as much production there outside of being called into the production room to voice a line or a tag or whatever they wanted real quick.
Before Specs, I took a little music theory and audio recording at Washtenaw Community College. I learned quite a lot about mics and mic placement and professional studios and how they're set up and even constructed in audio recording. That class was loads of fun for someone like me.
I'm fortunate enough to work in a music store (as in instruments and equipment), which I've also been fortunate enough to have done off and on for a good part of my working life, so I have pretty good knowledge about as well as access to just about anything I need.
My Studio Equipment
I'm currently doing my recordings on a Macbook using the ol' GarageBand. My mic is an Octava MK319 and I usually run it through a Pre-Sonus tube pre, which produces a nice clear signal and lots of it. I've got a Behringer XENYX802 4-channel mixer between the tube pre and Mac, which puts an effects send and return in the chain.
My recordings are mostly done in my apartment, but I have access to other studio space at my place of work if I need it for whatever reason.
I grew up as an Army brat, which kind of allowed me to go to places I probably wouldn't have if my dad was a carpenter or something, so I've seen some of the world from an early age. My mom was a music director at the nearest Catholic church wherever we moved and she actually just retired after about a gazillion years of masses, choir practices, weddings and funerals. One of my favorite bonding moments for me and my mom, actually, was setting up my four-track in the middle of the church among the empty pews years ago and aiming a pair of uni-directionals around with an omni on track three (they were all I had at the time!), trying to capture her amazing voice and the organ. Her "Ave Maria" is untouchable.
