Jewel Carter

Jewel began her broadcast career over fifteen years ago, with a position at college radio station WUEV in Evansville, Indiana. Empowered with a Bachelors degree in Theater and an Associates degree in Communications (Radio, TV, and Film), Jewel set her sights on Los Angeles. With a tape and resume, as well as confident spirit, she landed a sales position at CBS Radio Representatives. During her four-year employment with CBS, Jewel quickly moved up the ladder from the rep office and into the radio station. She held positions as Promotions Assistant, Producer/Public Affairs Director and interim News and Promotion Director at CBS’s KNX (AOR) and KODJ (Oldies). Jewel took a brief hiatus from radio, moved to Seattle and started a family in 1990. Taking a job as an Account Executive with a weekend shift at KKFX (K-FOX) was her first real taste of urban radio. By the time the station was sold two years later, Jewel had become the Assistant Program Director. After three years in Seattle, Jewel returned to where it all began, Evansville. She was offered a position as the Promotion Director for South Central Communications Radio Group. Within a year, Jewel moved from Promotion Director to Overnights at WIKY (AC), to a Midday spot specifically tailored for her, at sister station WJPS (Oldies). In December 1997, Jewel was presented with a golden opportunity... Music Director at America’s heritage station WEAS in Savannah. Little did she know her door for opportunity was widening. Shortly after relocating her family to Savannah, it was announced that WEAS would be sold to Cumulus Broadcasting. This sent the Program Director across town, and Jewel was the obvious choice to program the station during the transition. For some, overcoming the challenges of new ownership could be a daunting experience. However, for this young programmer, it’s just another window of opportunity. Jewel’s talents did not go unnoticed; she was awarded the National Black Programmers Coalition Music Director of the year award in 1999 and 2001. In 2003, Jewel crossed the street to work for Clear Channel Radio as Assistant Program Director of the Urban AC station WLVH. Other duties included Promotion Director for the clusters six radio stations and Director of Non-traditional Revenue. Immediately after Jewel’s arrival, her station WLVH and sister station WQBT would hold a three way tie (Arbitron Ratings), for first place with the heritage station WEAS. In the summer of 2005, Jewel was offered the position as Mid-day personality of Radio One’s WQNC-FM radio in Charlotte, NC. During that one year stint, Jewel moved from Mid-day’s to Afternoon Drive. After her one-year contract, Jewel opted not to renew and focus on her growing Voice Over business…Jewel’s Voiceworks.com. Jewel sites very early “conditioning” to R&B for her yearning to succeed in the entertainment industry. Jewel’s father is Johnnie Carter, Tenor with the world renowned Dells and former member of the Flamingoes. She grew up with the likes of Jerry Butler and Jackie Wilson literally hanging out in her living room. Short-term goals for this lady programmer include, learning to play the guitar and working on her first novel. A collection of short stories and poetry “My Journey: From the State of Forgiveness to a Town called Letting Go”.
