After graduating from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with majors in philosophy and psychology, he traveled to Japan to teach English, study Japanese, and practice aikido. He worked at an English school in Tokyo that had a recording studio. They liked his smooth, neutral Midwest accent and clear "teacher" speak and invited him to narrate English-learning textbooks and tests. After networking with other voice talents, he produced a demo and registered with Tokyo recording studios and talent agencies.
