Carl Watkins

Commercial voice over, imaging, dramatic naration

Voice Description

I can bring excitement and command attention to a reading. However, my favorite voicing is that which brings humor and intimately stirs emotion in the heart of the listener. I love theater of the mind, and the drama of expressing the feelings behind the words. I maintain a wholesome family-friendly image by voicing only scripts that do not detract from family values.

My Voice Experience

As a budding teenager growing up in a Los Angeles suburb, I was drawn to pop radio and loved to hear the DJs. In high school I vowed that some day I too would become a DJ. In 1964, at the age of 19, I became a friend of KRLA radio personality Casey Kasem, providing my P.A. system for use at the dances he hosted. I began my broadcast career in 1968 as an announcer for a small radio station near Salt Lake City. Since then I have worked as an air personality for top rated pop stations in several major markets including Salt Lake City, San Bernardino, Denver, Phoenix, Fresno, and San Diego. Through the years I have voiced thousands of spots for these stations, and recorded radio and television voice-overs for advertising agencies. In 1980 I voiced two campaigns of K-Tel radio and television spots. I have also created some unique character voices. I now provide imaging for K-TALK in Salt Lake City. I voice and produce the radio spots and informercials for Dee's Cereal. And I am the producer and host of the syndicated radio program "Sounds of Sunday" which airs over several radio stations in Idaho, Utah, and Arizona, and is streamed over the internet.

My Training

I began college at BYU in 1962 majoring in Electrical Engineer. One of my elective classes was the Principles of Radio and Television Acting. My first voice production began while I was an LDS missionary in Lewistown, Montana recording short inspirational sermons for KXLO. Since then I have received on-the-job voice training at a score of radio stations spanning over 40 years of experience.

I have been active in recording, mixing, and writing of spots and dramatic productions. Beside producing recordings of my own voice, I have recorded many high school and college choirs and bands, and other narrative voices. I produce the Glenn Rawson Stories, which air on several radio stations and on my syndication of "Sounds of Sunday."
