My Voice Experience

Since I was a little boy I was always copying the noises, sounds, and voices of the creatures on television and radios. When I was young my brothers and I would compete to see who could make the scariest voices as we were laying in the dark attempting to fall asleep. When Gremlins the movie came out, you can guess that little Gizmo wasn't the only voice that we practiced.

I often repeated what I heard from adults especially tv personalities like Howey Mandel and his character Bobbie from his cartoon show Bobbie's World.

One of my favorite things to do to this day is to call my friends and family and pretend that I am a movie producer, a bill collector, a lottery announcer, or even an old man with a southern accent that just doesn't seem to hear as well as he can talk. I usually get hung up on before long as I'm mistaken for someone with the wrong number. But it's fun while it lasts.

My Training

I have purchased and studied books such as Accents: A manual for Actors that breaks down accents to the very heart of their sound. Over 12 language accents in for the English language. It includes 2 cd's to hear actual sounds that the books usage represents.

Other training I would consider is that I have always had a somewhat unorthodox way of calling people by phone and just as often when I have company and get tired or bored. I tend to show my boredom by encouraging my voices and personalities to make people laugh.

Sometimes it's this time that I find new personalities/personas or characters that I often am requested to come back to at another gathering.

My angry Asian-American Chef in a busy kitchen is one of those requested characters.
