Voice Description

My natural speaking voice is clear and deep - good for narrations and clean commercial announcement. I do many character voices including high-pitched - suitable for cartoon voice overs (think little fury creatures) - as well as many lower character voices - along the lines of Dennis Haysbert for serious work, or similar to John Ratzenberger on the more comical (cartoon). All voices within that range are easy for me. Different accents are fun for me and, given time to study a sample or description, I can quickly develop a character to match pretty much any needed format. Similarly, I can usually produce very believable impersonations, given the opportunity to study an original sampling. (Makes me wonder if Rich Little was a distant relative or something ... probably not.) I enjoy working with all forms of voice delivery from comic to serious, cartoons to business. Finally, I have a great Midwest elderly man character, (think along the lines of Mark Twain), that is perfect for narration of children's tales, movies or cartoons, or even commercial work, (think CountryTime Lemonade-type delivery). Regarding the latter, I love laying down a laid-back, trustworthy delivery. Historically, I've found that these types of commercials have been very successful for my clients.

My Voice Experience

Beginning my career as a radio announcer in 1990, I worked 8-years in on-air radio - the final three as the host of my own morning show in the St. Louis, Missouri market. During that time I voiced hundreds of commercials, learned how to draft catchy copy and voiced many parodies, spoof songs and bits. I also voiced more than 2-dozen corporate videos, television commercials and dozens of recorded interviews.

During the past 12-years, I've continued to use my voice-over talents to benefit my own companies producing our radio and television commercials, telephone hold systems and various video projects for internal and external use. In addition, I've worked as a freelance voice over talent for many small companies in my area and kept my recording and editing equipment up-to-date throughout.

I am currently finishing the voice over for my own book, "MEXICAN BOWL FISHING: And Other Tales of Life," to be released as an audio book and have kept my on-air skills sharp with dozens of television and radio interviews promoting the same.

My Training

Previous training includes on-the-job training with several small radio stations, courses at Broadcast Center and nearly 20-years of radio commercial, on-air bit and video voice over production.

I have many years of writing experience, which also lends to my production capabilities in terms of copy writing and copy editing skills. Three years as a national magazine columnist, a year as a weekly newspaper columnist and an accomplished author boasting consistent, 5-star reviews.

As a small business owner, I've worked hard in many facets of retail and business-to-business sale, manufacturing and production, vendor relations, customer relations, sales and retail as well as business-to-business marketing. Though I now utilize the full-time creative and marketing staff at one of my companies for many of our marketing and advertising efforts, I work closely with those staff members, still giving guidance, suggestion and sharing in the writing and editing of copy. As a long-time business owner, I share many of the skill sets and understandings of needs that many of my clients have, which enhances our work-together process and helps me to better understand what is needed in most production scenarios.

My Studio Equipment

I have my own studio for commercial and voice over production, consisting of multi-track recording via a Eurorack MX 1604A board, multiple handling devices, all routed through ProTools on a Mac G-4 PowerPC. I have several other programs for additional output capabilities, allowing me to create many types of files.

Additional Skills

I am a featured monthly columnist with Motorcycle Product News Magazine, (National distribution, both print and Internet), as well as a weekly columnist with Sullivan Journal News and an author. My debut book, "MEXICAN BOWL FISHING: And Other Tales of Life," debuted in 2008. My columns and my book are humor-genre relating comical life stories as well as the often mislead lessons learned from my experiences.

In addition to the above artistic areas of my career, I am also the founding member of Unique Powersports - a successful, multi-line motorcycle dealership in Central Missouri that has earned accolades as a top retailing dealership in the U.S. during it's 12-year history.

I also serve as President of Wilkes Group - a large printing, direct mail, promotional packaging and fulfillment company headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri with an additional 160,000-square foot plant in Perryville, Missouri.

An on-air radio talent for the first 8-years of my career, I've done a lot of voice over work throughout my life - for my own companies as well as others - and have decided to continue that career now with the encouragement of my wife and children. I look forward to having the opportunity to provide quality voice over production for years to come, as I truly enjoy the creative outlet of voice over work.
