I am a businessman, lawyer and part-time university lecturer. I do private consulting under the name INTERlock Mediation. I provide mediation, negotiation, and large group facilitation services, together with advanced negotiation and mediation training for professionals.
I have two adult sons. Both are successful professionals.
My career started in 1961, in Courtenay, BC, Canada, after graduation from High School. I was hired by a local retail business to sell furniture and appliances.
In 1965, I moved to the city of Port Alberni, on Vancouver Island, BC, where I was employed by a well-respected, local appliance dealer, to expand his business into the upper-priced furniture business. Port Alberni was a mill town. It had lots of money, but the population, in general, had almost no taste when it came to home furnishings. It was a major challenge to market high-end goods; a challenge which I successfully met.
In 1973 I enrolled at the University of Victoria, in British Columbia, and completed a four-year Honors degree in Psychology in three years. I then crossed Canada, to complete a Law degree in 1980, at Dalhousie University Law School in Halifax, NS.
For the next 20 years, I practiced law in the city of Victoria, BC. I had an eclectic legal practice. I was fortunate to have two generous and brilliant mentors in my early career in law: Sir Michael Butler, QC, and Mr. Jack Angus. I could not have had better teachers. They introduced me to doing high-quality legal work on very large projects, as well as on the everyday, humdrum matters of the legal profession. I have worked on natural resource projects (minerals, oil and gas); on airline amalgamations (finance, and re-finance); I have mediated disputes between warring factions on the large Board of Directors of an amateur sports organization, divorcing spouses, and battling business partners. I have worked on juvenile matters, corporate issues, estate planning matters, family law disputes, and almost every other thing that lawyers do, including being legal counsel to a political cartoonist!
In addition to practicing law, I have completed the 214 hours of training required by the Conflict Resolution Certificate Program of the Justice Institute of BC. I hold certificates in Alternative Dispute Resolution from the University of Windsor, ON, the Law Society of British Columbia, and the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC. In 1997 I was certified by the Law Society of British Columbia as a Family Law Mediator.
I have practiced, and done training, in the areas of negotiation, mediation and arbitration. In 1999 I co-authored three courses, and then co-taught them, for the Institute of Conflict Analysis and Management (ICAM), in Victoria, BC. My teaching evaluations (both at ICAM, and for my subsequent university teaching) have consistently been at the very high end of the scale.
I have lectured at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, where I taught Management 525 (Commercial Law and Project Procurement) in the Master of Project Management degree program. This course was offered in a combined web-based, and face-to-face, format through the Penn State World Campus; and teaching it required me to both learn, and apply, a great deal of information technology. I am now comfortable in the cyber world. I have also taught an upper-level undergraduate course (Finance 430: Estate Planning and Taxation) for the Sam and Irene Black School of Business, at Penn State Erie.
Prior to leaving Erie, I was a volunteer in the Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) program.
Additionally, I have written a textbook on commercial law, negotiation and procurement practices for project managers who work primarily in the United States, Canada and the countries of the European Union. I am presently working on a new book entitled Mediation for Christian Leaders: a practical guide to peace-making.
