Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
When I lived in Texas from the mid-70's through the mid-80's, I picked up a bit of a local accent, according to an agent I hired to pitch my work to television news stations. But having come from the midwest, and settling in California, I feel that I'm accent-free.
My Voice Experience
I was a television news anchor/reporter from from the late 60's until 2005, when I had the opportunity ... following an involuntary parting with my tv station ... to bridge into radio. During that year, I did a little bit of voice work around town, and was registered with a San Francisco talent agency that got me an opportunity to portray a SF news reporter (type casting) for a CBC production about a mythical bird flu pandemic. I also shot a local tv commercial for a real estate company and narrated a travel documentary. I did relief disc jockey work for a music oldies weekend show (really oldies, dating back to the 40's). Then, in 2006, I had the opportunity to work as news director for BYU Broadcasting in Provo, Utah ... working primarily as a mentor in radio news, but also doing some tv public affairs and election coverage. I retired from that job in Februrary, 2011 and returned home to CA, where I am attemptin to jump-start a post-retirement career in voiceover work. I joined AFTRA when I worked in San Francisco television in the 90's and have kept my membership active. But I am equally open to non-union opportunities.
My Training
I have a BS in Radio-TV-Film from Northwestern University. Having worked in television until 2005, I am a skilled on-camera performer. I am not an actor, but I admit to being somewhat of a ham. I received good up-to-date graining in radio during my five years at KBYU-FM (BYU Broadcasting). I am profecient in multi-track editing with Adobe Audition and I have worked with NexGen and Wide Orbit at my last radio station.
My Studio Equipment
I can likely produce a product that will convince you I have more than I currently own. I have a Sony Linear PCM-M10 recorder and Adobe Audition editing software. I am in the market for a professional microphone, but can produce excellent WAV audio with what I have. My sound booth is the back seat of my Toyota Prius in the garage ... as long as my wife doesn't run the vacuum.
Additional Skills
I am currently volunteering as public affairs director for my church in Santa Cruz County, CA, where I write press releases for activities we consider worthy of news media coverage.
Oh yes ... and I play the clarinet in the Watsonville Community Band. I was a drum major at Northwestern and love marching bands.
