Biography
Virginia has been working in film from the age of thirteen, beginning as a production trainee on the feature 'Tom and Viv', Production Assistant on the feature 'Wilde', and additional Assistant Director on 'The Gathering' (Samuelson Productions).
Her ambition has always been to write and direct films, and to this end, while at Trinity College Dublin, she acted in and directed numerous theatre productions and eventually set up her own theatre company, directing successful shows in Andrews Lane and the Temple Bar Music Centre, enabling her to fund a short film, 'The Hitchhiking Game', which she wrote, produced and directed.
Straight out of College, Virginia began working for Fastnet Films, primarily as a producer, but also taking over as Head of Development, taking responsibility for all aspects of creative development in the company. During that time, developed a number of feature screenplays, which all received development support from the Irish Film Board and the European MEDIA programme. She worked closely with all writers associated with the company, and frequently engaged in re-writes with them.
In 2002, she associate produced the Irish feature 'The Halo Effect', starring Stephen Rea. In 2004 she produced the documentary 'Lord Haw-Haw: Portrait of a Fanatic', which was funded by RTE, the Irish Film Board and the History Channel. It broadcast in Ireland, May 2005 and in the UK in June 2005.
In 2005 she participated as a Producer-Writer on the EAVE programme. Her first feature screenplay, 'Learning by Heart', has been optioned in Ireland. Her second screenplay, 'A Further Word' has recently received development support from the Irish Film Board. She is developing with TG4 a four part documentary series on the history of prostitution, entitled 'Whores', which she will write and direct. Virginia also freelances as a voice-over artist and director for numerous commercial and corporate clients.
Her short film script, 'Mea Culpa' won the 2006 RTE/Galway Film Centre short film award, and will shoot early 2007. It is being produced by Katie Holly, of Blinder films. Virginias short story, 'Hesitation', was short listed for the prestigious 2006 RTE Radio 1 Francis MacManus short story competition, and will be broadcast in summer 2006 on RTE Radio 1. The short script based upon the story, also entitled 'Hesitation', has received funding from France and the UK and will shoot in September 2006.
