My Voice Experience
At 17, I had my own radio show, Teen Talks, through a work experience program. i interviewed guests and voiced the sponsor's commercials. This aired weekly for one year on C.K.A.Y., in Duncan, B.C. In the nineties, I did several "slice-of-life" radio commercials and PSA's for National Access Awareness Week. These were aired on C.H.U.M. in Toronto, Ontario. Upon moving to Maui, I did a warm, upbeat read for one commercial and provided the voice of a talking car for another. I've also had a narration role and two dramatic roles in various community theaters. Most recently, I was asked to do two character voices for a Harry Potter-based audio game.
My Training
I attended British Columbia's Institute of Technology in 1984 to study Radio Broadcasting. I learned announcing, radio operations, and copywriting. In 1985-86, I studied contemporary music at Capilano College in British Columbia. My main instrument was keyboard, but I was also involved in choir and private vocal coaching. In 1996, I attended a voice-over workshop taught by ACTRA coaches. During the 3-month course, I learned techniques for creating character voices and reading commercials for radio. The final exam was the production of a demo, featuring various types of commercial and character voices, both singly and as part of a group.
I participated in the SuchAVoice Master class, learned about recording and home studio setup, read copy for analysis by instructor and students, and gained a better understanding of my niche.
My Studio Equipment
I produce quality voice tracks using Goldwave.
Additional Skills
I worked as a Braille proofreader at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind from 1990-1995. This work involved attention to detail and an ability to communicate with others. I also led guests on a tour of the CNIB Library for the Blind, speaking knowledgeably and with enthusiasm about each area we visited. During this time, I also read stories to visiting children, to demonstrate the use of Braille, and I also created character voices as I read.
